A factory reset is one of the most powerful troubleshooting tools available for your router — and one of the most misused. It erases every custom setting you have configured: your WiFi network names, passwords, port forwarding rules, DHCP reservations, firewall rules, and admin credentials. The router returns to exactly the state it was in when it left the factory. Used at the right moment, it can resolve deep firmware corruption, persistent connection problems, and forgotten admin passwords in minutes. Used too casually, it turns a five-minute fix into an hour-long reconfiguration session. This guide covers when to reset, how to back up first, and exactly how to do it on the four most common router brands. Reset vs. Reboot: Which Do You Actually Need?

These two operations are frequently confused, and trying a reboot first can save you significant reconfiguration time.

  • Reboot (soft reset): Power-cycles the router without changing any settings. Clears temporary memory, re-establishes the ISP connection, and resolves most common issues — slow speeds, dropped connections, DNS failures. Always try this first. Simply unplug the power cable, wait 30 seconds, and plug back in.
  • Factory reset (hard reset): Wipes all configuration and restores factory defaults. Necessary when firmware settings are corrupted, you’ve forgotten the admin password, you’re selling or returning the router, or persistent problems survive multiple reboots and configuration changes.

When a Factory Reset Is the Right Move

A factory reset is warranted in the following situations:

  • Forgotten admin password: If you’ve locked yourself out of the router’s web interface and the default credentials on the label no longer work, a reset is the only recovery option.
  • Corrupted configuration: Settings that cause persistent issues — a broken port forwarding rule that can’t be deleted, a VLAN that breaks internet access, a QoS rule causing packet loss — are sometimes faster to wipe and rebuild than debug individually.
  • Selling or giving away the router: A factory reset ensures your WiFi passwords, admin credentials, and network configuration don’t transfer to the new owner.
  • Switching mesh systems: Removing a router from one mesh ecosystem (eero, Deco, AiMesh) before adding it to another typically requires a full reset to clear the previous mesh pairing.
  • Persistent unexplained slowdowns: If throughput has degraded significantly and firmware updates, reboots, and channel changes haven’t helped, a full reset occasionally resolves firmware state corruption that no other fix addresses.

Step 1: Back Up Your Router Settings First

Before you reset anything, save your current configuration. Most routers export all settings to a single file that can be restored after the reset — saving you from manually re-entering every WiFi password, port forwarding rule, and DNS override you’ve set up over the years.

TP-Link Routers

Log in to your router at 192.168.0.1 (or tplinkwifi.net). Navigate to Advanced → System Tools → Backup & Restore. Click Backup. The router downloads a .bin configuration file to your computer. Store it somewhere you can find it after the reset.

ASUS Routers

Log in at 192.168.1.1 (or router.asus.com). Go to Administration → Restore/Save/Upload Setting. Click Save Setting. The router downloads a .CFG file. Note that the backup includes your admin password — store the file securely.

Netgear Routers

Log in at 192.168.1.1 (or routerlogin.net). Navigate to Advanced → Administration → Backup Settings. Click Back Up to download a .cfg file. Netgear’s backup includes WiFi credentials, port forwarding rules, and parental control settings.

Amazon Eero

Eero does not export a local configuration file — your network settings are stored in your eero account in the cloud. After a reset and re-setup, most settings (network name, password, profiles) restore automatically when you log back in to the eero app with the same Amazon account. You do not need to manually back up before resetting an eero unit.

Step 2: Locate the Reset Button

Every router has a physical reset button, almost always recessed to prevent accidental presses. You’ll need a straightened paper clip or a SIM card ejector pin to reach it.

  • TP-Link: Labeled Reset or WPS/Reset on the rear panel or underside. On some models it is labeled with a circular arrow icon.
  • ASUS: Labeled Reset on the rear panel, typically near the WPS button.
  • Netgear: Labeled Factory Reset or Reset on the rear panel. The button opening accepts a paper clip.
  • Eero: Located on the back or underside depending on the model. The eero Pro 6E and eero Max 7 have a small recessed button on the rear panel near the Ethernet ports.

Step 3: Perform the Factory Reset

Physical Button Method (Works on All Brands)

With the router fully powered on and connected:

  1. Insert a paper clip into the reset button hole and press firmly.
  2. Hold for 10–15 seconds without releasing. The exact duration varies by model — watch the status LEDs for a change.
  3. On TP-Link, release when the SYS LED changes from slow-flashing to rapid-flashing. On ASUS, release when all LEDs flash simultaneously. On Netgear, release when the Power LED blinks amber. On eero, release when the LED ring pulses yellow.
  4. Wait 2–3 minutes for the router to complete the reset and fully boot to factory defaults before attempting to connect.

Do not hold the button for longer than 20 seconds on most routers — some models interpret an extended hold as a different operation (such as WPS activation rather than reset).

Web Interface Method (TP-Link, ASUS, Netgear)

If you still have access to the admin interface and simply want to start fresh:

  • TP-Link: Advanced → System Tools → Backup & Restore → Factory Restore. Confirm the warning and wait for the reboot.
  • ASUS: Administration → Restore/Save/Upload Setting → Restore button. The router reboots to factory defaults.
  • Netgear: Advanced → Administration → Backup Settings → Erase. Confirm the dialog to proceed.

Eero App Method

To factory reset an eero device through the app: open the eero app, tap the Settings tab, select the specific eero device you want to reset, scroll to the bottom and tap Remove eero. The device resets itself during the removal process. To re-add it to your network, tap the + button in the app and follow the setup wizard.

Step 4: Reconnect and Reconfigure

After the reset completes, the router broadcasts its factory default WiFi network (the SSID and password are printed on the label on the bottom or back of the router). Connect to that network from your computer or phone and navigate to the router’s default IP address — typically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 — to reach the setup wizard.

If you saved a backup file before resetting, restore it now:

  • TP-Link: Advanced → System Tools → Backup & Restore → Restore. Browse to your .bin file and upload.
  • ASUS: Administration → Restore/Save/Upload Setting → Upload Setting. Browse to your .CFG file.
  • Netgear: Advanced → Administration → Backup Settings → Restore from Saved Settings. Upload your .cfg file.

Troubleshooting After a Reset

If your internet connection does not work after the reset and reconfiguration, the most common causes are:

  • WAN type not configured: Cable internet typically uses DHCP (automatic IP) and requires no additional settings. Fiber from AT&T, Frontier, or CenturyLink often requires PPPoE credentials that were stored in your old configuration — contact your ISP for these if you did not record them.
  • Modem needs a reboot: After a router reset, unplug your cable modem or ONT for 30 seconds and plug it back in. Some modems bind to the router’s MAC address and will not issue a new IP to a “new” device until they are rebooted.
  • Default credentials rejected: Some newer TP-Link and Netgear routers prompt you to create a new admin password during initial setup rather than using a printed default. Follow the on-screen setup wizard rather than trying the label credentials.
