How to Fix Slow WiFi on a Vizio SmartCast TV: Band Selection, DNS, Network Reset, and Firmware Update Fixes
Vizio SmartCast TVs need a sustained 25 Mbps connection for smooth 4K playback — and most slow-WiFi problems come down to four fixable settings: band selection, DNS, memory cache, and firmware. Here’s how to diagnose and resolve every common cause.
Slow WiFi on a Vizio SmartCast TV typically surfaces as buffering mid-stream, apps that take a long time to load, or a spinning wheel when you open a channel. In most cases the problem is not your ISP — it’s a fixable local setting. Vizio’s SmartCast platform needs at least 25 Mbps of sustained throughput for 4K HDR streams; if anything interrupts that flow, playback stalls. The good news is that band selection, DNS, a memory clear, and a firmware update resolve the majority of slow-SmartCast complaints without any hardware changes.
Step 1: Confirm Your Speed at the TV
Before changing any settings, verify that your Vizio TV is actually receiving adequate speed. Run a speed test on a phone or laptop connected to the same WiFi band as the TV and compare that result to your ISP plan speed. Minimum targets for smooth playback:
- HD (1080p) streaming: 5–8 Mbps sustained
- 4K HDR streaming (Netflix, Disney+, Vudu): 25 Mbps sustained
- 4K Dolby Vision (Apple TV+, Amazon): 25–35 Mbps
If measured speed falls below these thresholds, the problem is weak WiFi signal or network congestion — proceed to Steps 2 and 6. If speed looks fine but streaming still buffers, focus on Steps 3 through 5.
Step 2: Switch to the 5 GHz Band
The 2.4 GHz band is shared by almost every device in your home — phones, tablets, smart home gadgets, and neighboring networks. In a typical suburban home, 2.4 GHz congestion can reduce your TV’s effective throughput to 20–40 Mbps even on a 500 Mbps plan. The 5 GHz band is less crowded, offers significantly higher throughput at typical living-room distances, and is the right default for any SmartCast TV within 30–40 feet of the router.
To switch bands on a Vizio SmartCast TV:
- Press the Menu button on your remote (or the V-key on newer models)
- Navigate to Network › Wi-Fi
- Select your router’s 5 GHz network — usually labeled with “_5G”, “_5GHz”, or “5” at the end
- Enter your WiFi password and connect

Vizio SmartCast uses DNS lookups to reach streaming service servers before each connection. Switching to Google’s (8.8.8.8) or Cloudflare’s (1.1.1.1) public DNS servers often cuts app launch time noticeably.
To change DNS on a Vizio SmartCast TV:
- Press Menu › Network › Manual Setup
- Set IP Settings to Manual
- Note your current IP address, subnet mask, and gateway from the Network info screen, then re-enter them manually
- Set DNS Server 1 to
8.8.8.8(Google) or1.1.1.1(Cloudflare) - Set DNS Server 2 to
8.8.4.4(Google) or1.0.0.1(Cloudflare) - Save and reconnect
After saving, open the SmartCast home screen and check whether app thumbnails and content rows load faster. If results are unchanged, the bottleneck is elsewhere — continue to Step 4.
Step 4: Clear the TV’s Memory Cache
SmartCast runs on an embedded Android-based OS that accumulates memory fragmentation over time, especially on older M-Series and V-Series models with limited RAM. Clearing the active memory cache does not erase your settings or account logins — it releases memory occupied by background processes that have built up since the last full restart.
To clear memory on a Vizio SmartCast TV:
- Press Menu › System › Reset & Admin
- Select Clear Memory (RAM) and confirm
- The TV restarts automatically
On models without this option, unplug the TV from the wall for 60 seconds (not just standby — a full power cycle), then plug back in. This performs a hard memory clear. Test streaming immediately after the restart to compare app launch speed and playback responsiveness.
Step 5: Update SmartCast Firmware
Vizio releases SmartCast firmware updates that address streaming performance regressions, WiFi driver bugs, and app compatibility issues. Firmware updates are often the single highest-impact fix for SmartCast TVs with sudden WiFi slowdowns — particularly after a previous automatic update introduced a regression. - Do not power off the TV during the update
